The Romantic Mass

Choral Works by Rheinberger and Brahms

Saint Clement's Choir, Philadelphia
Peter Richard Conte, Director

In the midst of the nineteenth century's musical quest for newness and bold self-expression, Joseph Rheinberger (1839-1901) was a composer who, musically, looked both forward and backward.   Although he flourished during a time in music history when tremendous innovations and new musical vocabularies were emerging, Rheinberger remained true to his own more conservative nature.
Like Rheinberger, Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) was a composer who found artistic inspiration in music of the past.
