ATMA: Sanskrit word meaning true self or soul
Founded in 1995 by its president Johanne Goyette, ATMA Classique holds a unique position as Canada's international independent classical record label. Such world-renowned international artists as Emma Kirkby, Barthold Kuijken, Hervé Niquet, Nancy Argenta, Teatro Lirico, Stephen Stubbs and Anne Azéma are featured alongside some of Canada's finest musicians and ensembles, including Daniel Taylor, Suzie LeBlanc, Measha Brueggergosman, Jannick Nézet-Séguin, Les Boréades, Les Voix humaines and the Theatre of Early Music, among many others.
The ATMA Classique catalogue includes over 150 releases ranging from medieval to contemporary music, with a particular emphasis on music of the baroque era. The Montreal-based label's discs are distributed all over the world and receive critical acclaim from many of the industry's top publications, including Fanfare which recently declared. "This release is consistent with the high standards established and maintained by the Canadian firm ATMA. and is yet another star in its already-laden crown."
ATMA Classique recordings are notable for their high standards and distinctive programs, which are original and creative. The label prides itself on establishing a dynamic, collaborative approach towards the artistic direction of each project. Ms. Goyette, also the label's sound engineer, strives to capture the most natural possible acoustics suitable to the particular repertoire for each recording.
Many ATMA Classique discs have been nominated for awards, including the 2001 Juno Award winner Nouveaux territoires featuring the music of Chan Ka Nin. Other awards include five Prix Opus, a Felix Award for Daniel Taylor's Dowland disc in the category of Classical Disc of the Year, Small Ensemble, and the 2001 SODEC Prize for Excellence in Exports.
